Alder is usually a rustic wood with Knot holes 1 3/4 thick. Each shelf can hold 45 lbs per stud. All shelves are finished with a 2 part catalyzed satin finish. Alder stain color has a warm brown tone with character. If you do not like knotholes check out our custom color listings. Some shelves may be more clear with much less Knot holes. We make sure all shelves in your order match in color and tone
